conjunctions

Words joining clauses

Conjunctions are words that connect other words, phrases, or clauses.

The coordinating conjunctions—and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so—join elements of equal grammatical rank: tea and coffee, tired but happy.

Subordinating conjunctions like because, although, and if introduce dependent clauses: I left because it was late.

The term also refers to alignments of celestial bodies: a conjunction of Venus and Mars.
