compact disk

Shiny music circle

A compact disk (usually CD) is a plastic disc that stores digital data as microscopic pits read by a laser.

CDs revolutionized music distribution in the 1980s, replacing vinyl records and cassettes with cleaner sound and random track access.

The format expanded to CD-ROMs for computer data and recordable CD-Rs.

Though largely supplanted by streaming and flash storage, CDs remain in use.

Also spelled compact disc.
