coli

Intestinal bacteria species

Coli appears almost exclusively in *E. coli*, the common name for *Escherichia coli*, a bacterium that lives in the intestines of humans and other animals.

Most strains are harmless, but some cause food poisoning: The outbreak was traced to E. coli contamination in lettuce.

The term comes from Latin *colon*, the large intestine.
