E coli
Intestinal rod bacteria
E. coli (short for Escherichia coli) is a species of bacteria that lives in the intestines of humans and other animals.
Most strains are harmless and even beneficial, but certain strains cause food poisoning with severe cramping and diarrhea: The outbreak was traced to E. coli in contaminated lettuce.
E. coli contamination typically comes from fecal matter reaching food or water supplies.
