fruitworm
Crop-destroying caterpillar stage
A fruitworm is the larva of any of various moths or beetles that feeds on fruit.
Different species target different crops—corn earworms attack tomatoes (and are called tomato fruitworms when they do), while cranberry fruitworms bore into cranberries.
The term is practical rather than scientific, naming the pest by the damage it causes: The fruitworms got to the raspberries before we did.
