rank insignia
Shoulder stripes, stars
Rank insignia are the visible symbols—badges, stripes, bars, stars, or other devices—worn on military or paramilitary uniforms to indicate a person's position in the chain of command.
Police, firefighters, and similar organizations also use rank insignia.
The specific symbols vary by country and branch of service: The sergeant's rank insignia showed three chevrons.
