Jacobin
French Revolution radical
A Jacobin was a member of the radical political club that dominated the French Revolution during its most violent phase, the Reign of Terror (1793–94).
The name came from their meeting place, a former Dominican convent—Dominicans were called Jacobins in France.
By extension, Jacobin now describes any extreme political radical, especially one favoring revolutionary methods: The party's Jacobin wing pushed for sweeping reforms. (Lowercase jacobin is a breed of pigeon.)
