coaster brake
Backpedal to halt
A coaster brake is a brake on a bicycle that engages when you pedal backward.
Standard on children's bikes and cruisers, it requires no hand lever—you simply reverse the pedal motion to slow or stop.
The name comes from coasting: the brake activates only when you stop pedaling forward and push back.
