coalpits

Underground fuel excavations

Coalpits are excavations from which coal is extracted, whether open surface mines or the entrance shafts to underground mines.

The term is older and more British than American, largely replaced by *coal mine* in contemporary usage.

The village grew up around the coalpits that employed most of its men.
