coalbed

Subterranean fuel deposit

A coalbed is a layer or seam of coal within the earth, formed from compressed ancient plant material.

The term appears most often in discussions of mining and energy extraction: coalbed methane refers to natural gas trapped within coal deposits, released during mining or extracted commercially.
