coal oil

Old lamp liquid

Coal oil is kerosene or a similar petroleum distillate used for lamps and heating, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The term persists in rural American dialects: Grandma still called it coal oil long after everyone else said kerosene.

Originally it referred to oil extracted from coal, but the name transferred to petroleum-based lamp fuel.
