coal chute
Fuel delivery passage
A coal chute is a sloped channel or shaft for transferring coal from street level down to a basement storage area.
Common in older buildings from the era of coal heating, coal chutes allowed delivery workers to pour coal directly into the cellar without entering the house: The old brownstone still has its original coal chute.
