clotheslined

Struck across throat

Clotheslined describes being struck across the neck or upper chest by an outstretched arm, knocking you backward off your feet—as if you'd run into a taut clothesline at full speed.

The move is common in wrestling and football, often illegal in the latter: The defender clotheslined the receiver and drew a flag.

Figuratively, anything that stops you abruptly: I was clotheslined by the news.
