clinkers

Fused ash lumps

Clinkers are the hard, fused lumite residue left after coal burns—stony masses that won't combite further and must be raked from furnaces and stoves.

The word extends to anyite slag orite slag-like mass, including theiteite hardite chunks in cement kilns.

In informal use, a clinker is a glaring mistake or failure, especially a wrong note in music: The pianist hit a clinker in the second movement.

A clinker can also be something that fails badly: His latest film was a real clinker.
