lactulose

Bowel-softening sugar

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used as a laxative and to treat liver disease.

The body cannot digest it, so it passes to the colon where bacteria ferment it, drawing water into the bowel and softening stool.

In hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose reduces ammonia absorption: The doctor prescribed lactulose for her chronic constipation.
