chometz

Passover's banned grains

Chometz (also spelled chametz or hametz) is leavened food that Jewish law forbids during Passover.

The prohibition commemorates the Israelites' hasty exodus from Egypt, when they had no time to let their bread rise.

Before Passover, observant Jews thoroughly clean their homes to remove all chometz and may symbolically sell any remaining leavened products to a non-Jew.

We donated our chometz to the food bank before the holiday.
