buyback

Corporate share reacquisition

A buyback is the repurchase of something previously sold.

Corporations conduct stock buybacks to reduce shares outstanding, often to boost share price or return capital to shareholders: The company announced a $10 billion buyback program.

Buybacks also occur with consumer goods—manufacturers offering to repurchase products, or gun buyback programs where authorities purchase firearms from the public.
