chametz

Forbidden Passover bread

Chametz is leavened food that Jewish law prohibits during Passover, when Jews commemorate the Exodus from Egypt.

The prohibition recalls that the Israelites fled so hastily they had no time to let their bread rise.

Chametz includes any food made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt that has been allowed to ferment—bread, pasta, beer, and most baked goods.

Observant Jews remove all chametz from their homes before the holiday begins and avoid eating or possessing it for the duration.
