choke out

Cut off air

Choke out means to strangle someone into unconsciousness, typically using a chokehold: The bouncer choked him out and dragged him to the curb.

In gardening, aggressive plants choke out weaker ones by depriving them of light, water, or nutrients: The kudzu choked out everything else in the yard.

To choke something out can also mean to say it with difficulty, as if being strangled: She choked out an apology through her tears.
