Fails under pressure

Chokes is the verb form of choke—to have breathing obstructed, or to obstruct another's breathing: He chokes every time he eats too fast, She chokes up when she talks about her late father.

In sports, to choke is to fail under pressure: He always chokes in the playoffs.

As a noun, chokes are devices that restrict flow—in engines, the choke limits air intake; in shotguns, it narrows the shot pattern.
