Schengen zone
Passport-free travel area
The Schengen zone is the area comprising European countries that have abolished passport and border controls at their mutual borders.
Named after the Luxembourg village where the agreement was signed, it allows free movement of people across member states: Once you enter the Schengen zone, you can travel between countries without showing your passport.
The zone includes most EU members plus a few non-EU countries like Norway and Switzerland.
