self-isolation

Staying home alone

Self-isolation is the practice of separating yourself from others, typically to prevent spreading illness.

The term became ubiquitous during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were asked to self-isolate after exposure or infection: I tested positive, so I'm self-isolating for five days.

Unlike quarantine, which may be imposed by authorities, self-isolation emphasizes voluntary compliance.
