safe room

Fortified home shelter

A safe room is a fortified space within a building designed to provide protection during emergencies.

The term covers two main uses: a reinforced shelter against tornadoes or hurricanes, and a secure retreat during home invasions or other threats.

Safe rooms range from converted closets with reinforced doors to purpose-built steel or concrete enclosures: They waited out the tornado in the basement safe room.
