cattle guards
Hoofed-animal deterrents
Cattle guards are metal grids placed over ditches at fence openings, allowing vehicles to pass while preventing livestock from crossing.
The gaps between bars are wide enough that hoofed animals won't step on them.
Common on ranch roads and rural highways where fences meet roadways: We rattled over the cattle guard onto the property.
Also called cattle grids in British English.
