rumble strips
Road edge alerts
Rumble strips are textured grooves cut or raised along road edges or centerlines that vibrate a vehicle when crossed, alerting drowsy or distracted drivers they're drifting from their lane.
The name comes from the noise they produce: I hit the rumble strips and snapped awake.
Similar strips sometimes appear before toll booths or stop signs to slow traffic.
