ha-has

Ditches concealing boundaries

Ha-has are sunken fences or ditches used in landscape design to create boundaries without interrupting views.

The wall sits below ground level, invisible from the house, so the lawn appears to extend seamlessly into the surrounding countryside while still keeping livestock out: The estate's ha-has let sheep graze right up to the garden's edge.

The name supposedly comes from the surprised exclamation upon discovering the hidden barrier.
