catamount

Wild American feline

A catamount is a wild cat, especially a cougar or mountain lion.

The word is a contraction of "cat of the mountain" and appears mainly in American regional usage, particularly in New England and Appalachia: The hikers spotted catamount tracks in the snow.

It also names sports teams, most notably the University of Vermont's.
