cardiac tamponade

Pericardial fluid accumulation

Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening condition in which fluid accumulates in the sac surrounding the heart, compressing it and preventing it from filling properly.

The buildup—often blood, pus, or inflammatory fluid—restricts the heart's pumping ability and can cause shock or death if not relieved.

Treatment typically involves draining the fluid with a needle or surgery: The gunshot wound caused cardiac tamponade.
