Carbonite is a fictional substance from the Star Wars universe, a metalite alloy used for cryogenic preservation—most memorably when Han Solo is frozen in it.
The term has entered broader usage to describe any state of suspended animation or being put on indefinite hold: My project has been in carbonite since the budget cuts.
Carbonite is also a brand name for cloud backup services, trading on connotations of safe preservation.
