blue-water
Far from shore
Blue-water describes naval operations or capabilities on the open ocean, far from coastal waters: a blue-water navy, blue-water sailing.
The term distinguishes deep-sea activity from brown-water (rivers and estuaries) or green-water (coastal) operations.
A blue-water vessel is designed for long ocean voyages rather than staying close to shore.
