calcium carbide

Generates flammable gas

Calcium carbide is a chemical compound that reacts violently with water to produce acetylene gas.

This reaction made it useful in early lamps—miners' headlamps and automobile headlights before electric lighting became standard.

The compound is still used industrially to produce acetylene for welding and in the manufacture of various chemicals.
