blood tax

Mandatory soldier service

Blood tax refers to a form of tribute or obligation paid through human lives rather than money or goods.

Historically, it denoted systems where conquered peoples were required to provide soldiers or children to their rulers, most notably the Ottoman devshirme system that conscripted Christian boys.

The term now appears figuratively to describe any heavy toll in human suffering exacted by war, oppression, or dangerous circumstances: The coal industry's blood tax was measured in miners' lives.
