black water

Toilet drainage effluent

Black water is wastewater containing human waste—sewage from toilets, as distinguished from gray water (from sinks and showers).

The term also describes the dark, tannic water found in swamps and slow-moving rivers, stained by decomposing vegetation: The canoe drifted through black water beneath the cypress trees.

In boating, black water refers to the holding tank contents.
