drain field

Underground sewage filter

A drain field is the underground network of perforated pipes that disperses wastewater from a septic tank into the surrounding soil.

The pipes run through gravel-filled trenches, allowing effluent to filter gradually into the earth.

Also called a leach field.

The inspector said our drain field needed replacing.
