borstal
Juvenile detention facility
A borstal was a British reformatory for young offenders, typically ages 16 to 21, emphasizing rehabilitation through education and training rather than mere punishment.
The term comes from the village of Borstal in Kent, where the first such institution opened in 1902.
The system was abolished in 1982, replaced by youth custody centres, but the word persists in British English as informal shorthand for juvenile detention: He spent two years in borstal. (Capitalized Borstal is the village in Kent.)
