barres

Studio practice rails

Barres is the plural of barre, the horizontal rail that ballet dancers grip during warmup exercises, typically mounted to a wall or freestanding.

By extension, barre has become a fitness genre blending ballet-inspired movements with elements of Pilates and yoga: She takes barre classes three times a week.

The word comes from French, where it simply means bar or rod.
