barracoon
Captive holding pen
A barracoon was an enclosure or barracks used to confine enslaved Africans before they were transported across the Atlantic.
These structures appeared along the West African coast during the slave trade era: The captives were held in a barracoon at the river's mouth for three weeks before the ship arrived.
The word is historical, appearing in accounts of the transatlantic slave trade.
