bark canoe
Birch-skinned river vessel
A bark canoe is a lightweight watercraft made by stretching tree bark—typically birch—over a wooden frame.
Indigenous peoples of North America, particularly in the Great Lakes and northeastern regions, developed these canoes for fishing, hunting, and transportation along rivers and lakes.
The birch bark construction made them light enough to portage between waterways: They crossed the lake in a bark canoe.
