white cedar
Light-barked evergreen
White cedar refers to several North American coniferous trees with light-colored, aromatic, rot-resistant wood.
The name applies most often to the Atlantic white cedar of eastern swamps and the northern white cedar (also called arborvitae) of the Great Lakes region.
The wood is prized for shingles, posts, and boat building: The fence posts are white cedar—they'll outlast us all.
