song lines
Aboriginal navigation traditions
Song lines are paths across the Australian landscape that Aboriginal peoples navigate through traditional songs, with lyrics describing landmarks, water sources, and sacred sites in sequence.
The songs function as oral maps, encoding geographic and spiritual knowledge that can guide travel across vast distances.
Also called dreaming tracks.
The concept gained wider recognition through Bruce Chatwin's 1987 book *The Songlines*.
