banyan

Many-trunked tree

A banyan is a tropical fig tree known for dropping aerial roots from its branches that grow down into the soil and become secondary trunks, allowing a single tree to spread into a vast, interconnected grove: The banyan covered half an acre.

The word comes from traders who gathered in the shade of such a tree in India.
