bailing

Scooping water out

Bailing is the present participle of bail in its various senses.

Most commonly, bailing means removing water from a boat: We spent an hour bailing out the canoe.

It also means securing someone's release from jail by posting bail, or abandoning a situation: I'm bailing on the party tonight.

In skydiving or aviation, bailing out means jumping from an aircraft.
