bailing out
Abandoning a plane
Bailing out covers two distinct actions of removal.
One involves scooping water from a boat to keep it afloat: We spent an hour bailing out the canoe.
The other means abandoning something—parachuting from a damaged aircraft, or withdrawing from a failing venture: The investors bailed out when profits dropped.
To bail someone out is to post their bail or rescue them from difficulty: Her parents always bail her out of trouble.
