Rings of light
Aureoles is the plural of aureole, referring to circles of light depicted around sacred figures in religious art—the glowing halo surrounding a saint's head or the full-body radiance called a mandorla.
The term extends to any halo-like ring: the luminous corona visible around the sun during an eclipse, or the pinkish-brown rings surrounding nipples.
The aureoles in medieval paintings were often rendered in gold leaf.
