ashpan

Fireplace debris collector

An ashpan is a metal tray fitted beneath a fireplace, stove, or furnace grate to catch falling ashes.

It slides out for emptying.

The term appears most often in connection with steam locomotives, where the ashpan sits below the firebox: The engineer cleaned out the ashpan at the end of the run.
