article of faith

Fundamental religious tenet

An article of faith is a belief held as fundamental and not requiring proof.

Originally religious—one of the core doctrines a believer accepts—the phrase now applies to any conviction treated as beyond question: For him, the efficiency of free markets is an article of faith.

The term often carries a hint of skepticism, suggesting the belief may be more assumed than examined.
