cinematheque
Art cinema venue
A cinematheque is a small theater or archive devoted to film preservation and exhibition, typically showing classic, foreign, or experimental movies rather than mainstream releases.
Unlike commercial cinemas, cinematheques focus on film as art and cultural heritage: The cinematheque is screening a retrospective of French New Wave directors.
The term comes from French and follows the model of "library" (bibliothèque).
