application programming interface

Code communication bridge

An application programming interface, or API, is a set of rules and protocols that allows different software programs to communicate with each other.

APIs define how one program can request services or data from another: The app uses Twitter's API to display tweets.

Developers build applications faster by using APIs rather than writing every function from scratch.

The term is often shortened to just API.
