anal gland

Dog's scent organ

Anal glands are small sacs located on either side of a mammal's anus that secrete a pungent fluid used for scent marking and identification.

In dogs and cats, these glands normally empty during defecation, but may become impacted and require manual expression: The vet had to express the dog's anal glands.
