almshouses

Homes for indigent

Almshouses are charitable housing for the poor, elderly, or infirm—residences provided at little or no cost by religious organizations, municipalities, or private benefactors.

The institution dates to medieval Europe, when such houses offered shelter to those who could not support themselves.

Some historic almshouses still operate today: The almshouses along the village green have housed pensioners since 1650.
